この噴水のための群像はベルニーニの初期の作品で、モンタルト枢機卿がローマの別荘のために制作を依頼した。その後の所蔵家の中に画家のジョシュア・レイノルズ卿がいるが、彼が1787年にこの彫刻をイギリスに持ち帰った。
この作品は、シクストウス5世の甥アレッサンドロ・ペレッティ枢機卿の注文で制作されたもので、元来はエスクイリーノの丘にあった枢機卿の別荘ヴィラ・モンタルトの庭園に置かれていた。現在のテルミニ駅近辺にあったこのヴィラ・モンタルトは、残念ながら今日影も形もないが、17世紀の版画から大体の様子を知ることができる。それを見ると、この彫刻は古代の彫像で飾られた丸い池の奥に置かれていたらしい。この作品の主題も『アエネイス』に基づき、トロイアを憎む女神ユノーが起こした嵐を海神ネプテューンが鎮めるという有名な一節が、その出典である。
ベルニーニの作品を見る時、それが本来置かれていた場所を考慮することは、本質的重要性を有している。彼は常に置かれるべき場所を、作品の一部のように捉えたからである。胸像のような場合でさえ、彼は慎重にその置き場所を吟味した。この《ネプテューンとトリトン》も、下方の池と噴水に呼応するよう意図されている。つまり野外にあって、しかも実際の水の動きを制するよう意図されたこの彫刻は、その分大げさなほどにダイナミックで劇的でなけれぱならなかったのだ。このように彫刻作品と環境を一体のものとして構想する、または後に見るように、その環境自体を自ら創造するベルニーニの能力は比類なく、彼が真に偉大な天才だったことを痛感させる。この《ネプテューンとトリトン》はその第一歩として重要である。そこには未だマニエリスム的構成が尾を引いているが、《アエネアス》の小心さは大胆に克服されている。
